Poem for management

when one is stuck
and out of luck
sit down and think
and get a drink
cool you head down
and don't you frown
because organizing your thoughts
will prevent onslaughts
Ideas will come
so now don't you fret
cause you'll get it all done
you bet! you bet!

Communicating via Blog

I think that blog itself is a good way to communicate. People can write what they feel about something on it, and other people can know the answer from reading the blog. And for the purpose of homework, I think it is a good way too. Since we have many activity during the class, blog is a way for us to express our feeling about the activity, and also the professor can know if we learn anything from the activity from reading our blogs. However, I think that the feedback or the reply to other people's blog seems to be not that useful. For me, replying other people's blog is just one part of my homework. I have to finish it in order to get my grade.
But of course, this is the best way for me to do other homework like group project or a 500 words essay.
And I think I will continue posting something about management if I'm taking another management class. Because, if I post something about my own life on this blog, it will looks wired.

McDonald assignment

Since my first mid-term’s grade is not that good, so I went to McDonald with my friends to do the extra credit assignment. In this assignment, we need to order a hamburger with four pickles and a French fries with no salts. And we need to see how they process this special order.

Basically, we went to the McDonald located on 28th street and 3rd avenue. Since we have five people all together, we order five hamburgers with four pickles and five French fries with no salts. The lady who took care of us looked at us in a weird way when we told her our order. However, she still processed the order and she yelled to
the back in the kitchen in Spanish. Since I don’t understand Spanish, I guess she told the food preparer about our special order. After that, she asked us for the money and gave us the receipt. But she didn’t give us five separate receipts. So we told her about it and she looked at us very angry and said it was not her fault. And she asked the manager to help us. After the manager knew about our situation, he told us to step aside and went to handwrite five receipts for us. During that time, I saw that lady who took care of us went to the French fries section and brought us five French fries with no salts. After around ten to fifteen minutes, the manager came back and gave us five handwritings receipts. We thanked him and we left the McDonald. It took us around fifteen to twenty minutes all together.

During this process, there are three people involved, the cashier who takes care of our special order and the French fries with no salts, the food preparer who prepare the hamburgers with four pickles, and the manager who handwrite five receipts for us.

From all of the three people, I don’t like the cashier who takes care of us. We know that our order is special, but she should not look at us in a weird way. And she was very angry at us when we told her that we need five receipts but she only gave us one, and she started to argue with us. A person who provides services to customer should not be like her. They should respect to the customer even they are annoying and difficult to communicate. I think that the manager who writes us five receipts is very kind and he shows us respect.

I think that the management process they use is pretty common in most of the fast food restaurants. The cashier has the ability to ask for the preparer to make the special orders, because usually, cashier has more power than the regular employee. And if there is something they cannot do, they will tell the higher level people like the manager to help them.

I think I will still go to that McDonald to buy food since I don’t have that special order. However, I think I will not stay on that lady’s cashier line since I have a bad experience last time.

The ABC's of DISC

After the long personal profile system test, I found out that I have an S high C personality. I think it is actually true in some point, but there is something that I think is not that right. S means steadiness. I think that I am a good listener, I like to help others, I show loyalty, and I like to have a stable harmonious work environment. However, I don't think I have demonstrated patience, and I don't perform in a consistent, predictable manner. C means conscientiousness. I think it's pretty match me to but not every part.

If I can change my personality, I wish I can have some tendencies from D, which is dominance. Since S and C are both somehow like a follower in a group and D is like a leader, if I have both of those personality, then everything will be more perfect than now. I won’t be that shy to take in front of a group of people, so presentation will be a lot easier for me to do.

I think that this test is a good way to find out how our personality is like and what you need to improve your personality. However, I think that this test cannot tell you how a person exactly is like, because some people will have different personality when they facing different kind of people.

The Power of Vision

When I was young, I always dream about what I will be and what I want to be in the future. And my dreams were always changing at that time. After I go into college, I start to think about what my goal will be after I graduate. And I choose three of my dreams and become my real goals.

The first goal is my professional goal, which is the main and the most important goal. I want to have a job that can give me enough money for myself and my families to use. Of course it is not a hard goal to reach if I don't spend much. However, since I have another goal that needs money, it become more difficult to reach.

The second goal is my personal goal. I want to travel all around the world. This goal needs time and money to be done, so it will be the hardest goal for me. Even if I didn't travel all around the world in my life, at least I can travel some of the countries in the world. I already went to most of the Asia countries such as China and Korea.

The last goal is also my personal goal. I want to have a happy and healthy family life. I think this is the common goal that no one wants to have a sad family which always argue or so. I think it's not too hard to reach if we respect each other in our family.

According to the video “The Power of Vision” we watched last class, it told us that

Vision without action is just a dream.
Action without vision merely wastes time.
Vision coupled with action can make things happen!

and I agree with it. So, I will try my best to do something to reach my goal, not just letting my goal to be a dream.

My mid term......

On monday, we got our first mid term of management back. The average grade is 68, which is pretty low. So, our professor let us decide what we want to do for our next mid term and the grade. At the beginning, people just started to talk to other people around them. Later on, it became many small group, but we didn't have a leader to put all of our thoughts together. Which means, we didn't actually have any result. Around 30 minutes before the class end, we finally had a person went out and write down all the thoughts on the board, and wanted us to vote. However, since there's a time limit, we cannot finish all of them. Actually, I don't really have a good grade in the mid term, so, of couse I want to do something about it. However, I think I am those people who handle conflict with avoidance. I didn't think that we will come out any good result at the beginning, and after a little disuession with my friend, we just sit back and look how other people were doing until they started to vote. I vote for the choice that I think it will be good for my grades, and of course for other people too. We have the same goal, and we did get some good result after the whole class discussion.

Last week in the management class, we had a class activity. We have to use the limited supplies to protect the egg from drooping 10 feet tall. During the process, I think our group did a good job. We almost did the same exact way the Planning Process is suppose to be. We know we have to protect the egg during the activity, so we can get five points for our next test. To get to the goal, we think of so many ways to do it. After a little bit of discussion, since we don't have a long time, we find out the "best" way to protect our egg. So, we started to separate the work to everyone, who is going to cut the straws, who is going to write down the information, and etc. And in the limited time period, we finish with what we wanted to made. However, our group's egg broke a little bit. Maybe there is some calcuation we did wrong. But I still think we did a good job even we did not protect the egg well, at least it's not broken like the one in the picture.

Is there enough time for my day????

I think the biggest problem that i have to face every day now, is how to manage my day, my week, and even my whole life.
For the whole week, I have school on Monday and Wednesday from 9am to 10pm, and Friday from 9am to 1pm. On Tuesday and Thursday, I have to work from 9am to 7pm. On Saturday and Sunday, I have a dancing class from 7pm to 8pm. It takes me about 2 hours to travel every day, sometimes even more. And I need about 8 hours to sleep, around 2-3 hours to eat, shower, and some small things. That means, I don't really have the time to do my homework, to review for my tests, to have a family day, and a lot of things that I want to do.
So, I think, if I can know how to manage my time, I can have some more free time to do the things that I need or I want to do. I hope I can manage my time better after this semester, and my life will be a lot more beautiful.

The first first

Hi, my name is Wai So Lau, everyone just call me So....
I am a student in Baruch college majoring in Finance and investment..
i'm taking this major because i heard a person said that, "The way to earn most money is to 'be' in the money."
i think the most easiest way to 'be' in the money will be in business. And the most interesting place in business for me is around finance and stocks market.
Since my parents have some stocks on their hands, i always help them to make decision about buying that stock or not, maybe that is also one of the reason why i'm interested in stocks.
