My mid term......

On monday, we got our first mid term of management back. The average grade is 68, which is pretty low. So, our professor let us decide what we want to do for our next mid term and the grade. At the beginning, people just started to talk to other people around them. Later on, it became many small group, but we didn't have a leader to put all of our thoughts together. Which means, we didn't actually have any result. Around 30 minutes before the class end, we finally had a person went out and write down all the thoughts on the board, and wanted us to vote. However, since there's a time limit, we cannot finish all of them. Actually, I don't really have a good grade in the mid term, so, of couse I want to do something about it. However, I think I am those people who handle conflict with avoidance. I didn't think that we will come out any good result at the beginning, and after a little disuession with my friend, we just sit back and look how other people were doing until they started to vote. I vote for the choice that I think it will be good for my grades, and of course for other people too. We have the same goal, and we did get some good result after the whole class discussion.

I did the same thing as you, just sit there and wonder how this will end. but what did you think you could have done better, would you participate with the discussion, maybe suggest something you like better. I just can't believe we were actually deciding for our grades, so I didn't think the whole thing would work, but I guess we were wrong. The result was pretty good, I like what 'they' have came up with, I mean besides supporting the votes, me and you practically did nothing, but that could be a good thing since we're not make the situation more complicated, right?

I feel as though we have to choose our battles wisely (in life). Since the decision of our class would directly impact our grades, I initially took a competitive approach because I wanted to exert my influence. Once I realized that this strategy/approach would not work, I became more passive. Generally I avoid conflict whenever possible..except when I really feel that something is so important that I can't stand by and watch. In those cases, I can only give up AFTER I've given a good effort.

same here. I took avoidance as well. I withdrew from participating in generating any more ideas, and only voted on in favor of the what other people came up with. I was surprised that we actually came to a final conclusion and achieve our objective. Despite the arguments, we came to an order by voting with 100% agreement. Well it was unbelievable, but i am glad that we accomplished it.!!!!

Like you, I did not do much about the activity. I was convinced that we would never come to a 100% agreement. Therefore, I sat back like you did waiting for the outcome. It is good that we had some leaders in our class who were optimists and believed in achieving the goal. And it came as a surprise to me that we actually achieved a satisfactory result.

I was also one of the people for whom the result of the vote was beneficial. I don't necessarily think that it's wrong to avoid "conflict", but if we are personally involved and if we could benefit from it, involvement is key.

If one does not get involved, he will be "pushed" to vote with the majority, whether it is individually beneficial for that person or not.
